The region of Costa Brava has learnt to shrug off its former image of
brown ale and fish and chips which it acquired when it became one of the
first areas in Spain to be made popular as a cheap holiday destination in
the 1970s. In fact, this was only true of a few resorts, and Costa Brava
is now considered one of the more peaceful places to visit. It has a rich
and creative heritage in the form of Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso and
is a truly diverse region of natural beauty. The real Costa Brava is not
hard to find. Discover some wonderful restaurants and stunning
architecture in the lovely fishing village of Sant Feliu de Guixols. Close
by is S`Agaro, founded as a Modernist town in the 1920s, while further
along is Begur with plenty of history to offer. If it is bustle and life
you are looking for, Platja d`Aro has plenty of bars, shops and a busy
beach. With a brief drive inland you can reach the restored medieval
village of Pals and Peratallada. Costa Brava`s capital in Girona, which
was originally a walled Roman city, strategically positioned between
Barcelona and the Pyrenees. Barcelona is well worth a visit while you are
in the region, and possibly an extended visit of a couple of nights may be
necessary to appreciate its charm. With its wonderful architecture,
including much by the famous Gaudi, such as his iconic Sagrada Familia and
the lovely gift market area of Las Ramblas you will be overwhelmed by its
beauty.
Costa Brava is famous for its tapas and there are plenty of tapas bars where you
can enjoy a relaxed couple of hours nibbling at a variety of small dishes of chorizos,
fried squid, garlic prawns, tomato based casseroles and salads while enjoying
an iced beer. Along the coast, the restaurants focus on fish and seafood dishes,
and an excellent traditional Catalan meal is not hard to find. If you are lucky,
you may find truffles on the menu, this being a good area for the delicious black
fungus. Visit the Dali museum in Figueres which holds the most comprehensive collection
of his work anywhere in the world and try to work out why this area was so attractive
to the greatest surrealists and cubists who every lived. Visit the Archeological
