The Costa Brava is located on Spain's north east coast and starts at the French border and finishes just a few miles south of the stunning city of Barcelona, the countries commercial, financial and entertainment epicentre. This area of Spain is rich in culture and has a very eventful history. Areas such as Lloret de Mar and Llafranc have become very popular with the tourist trade and although much if this is down to its picturesque layout and excellent climate, a great deal of tourists also visit these towns to sample the culture and affluent historical content of the area as well as their various places of interest.
Lloret de Mar is located about forty miles up the Spanish coast from Barcelona and has various archaeological sites that have been left behind from previous Roman and Iberian occupation. An example includes the Iberian Montbarbat settlement and the magnificent cliff fortress of Puig de Castellert that date back to about 250BC, with occupation lasting between the years of 250 - 210BC. Lloret de Mar has been constantly sculptured throughout the ages by recurring invasions such as the Romans and Iberians and the centre of the town was even moved one kilometre inland in order to provide added protection against frequent Saracen attacks throughout the 15th century. Other places of interest include the maritime museum and the beautiful Santa Cotilde Gardens which are an absolute must see if you are in the area.
The picturesque little town of Llafranc is considered to be amongst one the most luxurious holiday destinations within the Costa
Brava and is frequented by many Spanish tourists each year. Due to its fantastic pictographic qualities Llafranc has always been very popular with artists including Ernest Hemingway and the highly renowned Salvador Dali. It turns out that the birthplace of Dali, Figueres, is equally as vivid as locations like Llafranc but in its own purposeful way. Figueres is located about 10 miles south of the French border, 15 miles north of Girona City and within the province under the same name. The town is littered with pieces of Dali's sculptures and various other artistic creations by him and even has a museum that is dedicated to the talents of this much loved artist. The museum itself is quite extraordinary in appearance and contains one of the largest collections of his life's work. It is also believed that this museum also acts as the sacred burial place of the extraordinary Salvador Dali.
